The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that the United States has not communicated about a possible plea agreement being negotiated by Ovidio and Joaquín Guzmán López, sons of Joaquín 'el Chapo' Guzmán, detained in that country. In her morning conference, Sheinbaum stated that they are waiting to receive a notification regarding this matter.
According to the defense of the brothers, 'Los Chapitos' are seeking an agreement with the federal prosecutor in Chicago, which would involve pleading guilty and cooperating with authorities in exchange for a reduced sentence. This type of agreement has already been used by other drug traffickers who have faced justice in the United States.
The Mexican president pointed out that she has not received an official response after the request from former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to be informed about the arrests of Zambada and Guzmán. Violence in Sinaloa has increased since the detention of both, with more than 200 murders recorded since September 9.
Sheinbaum mentioned that Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente is having constant meetings with the U.S. ambassador, Ken Salazar, although she believes that the response to the presidential request has not been sufficient. The president also criticized the release of Ovidio, detained by Mexico and extradited to the United States in 2023, following Zambada's detention.
"From that point on, a wave of violence erupted in Sinaloa. So it is, this continues, that all information should be given," expressed Sheinbaum emphasizing the importance of clarifying the events and keeping the population informed.
