In Mexico City, the Secretariat of Citizen Security and the Attorney General's Office are investigating a shooting that took place in a tenement in the Morelos neighborhood. During the incident, members of the Tepito Union attacked possible members of the Anti-Union who were performing a religious ritual to raise a cross in honor of a murdered individual.
In the courtyard of the tenement, the hitmen from the Tepito Union surprised their rivals and opened fire, resulting in a tragic outcome that included the death of Andrik Herrera, a 20-year-old young man who allegedly belonged to the Anti-Union group. Herrera was attacked while in a blue truck and, despite being taken to a hospital, he died from the wounds he received.
After the attack, members of the Anti-Union held a nine-day prayer vigil in honor of Herrera, a ritual that includes prayers and the raising of a cross as part of the commemoration. The attackers, belonging to the Tepito Union, mocked the victims by spreading a video in which the cries of witnesses to the shooting could be heard.
This new episode of violence in the streets of Tepito highlights the territorial dispute between two rival gangs, the Tepito Union and the Anti-Union, whose confrontations have left a trail of blood in the area. The attack in the Morelos tenement, where the religious act was taking place, underscores the brutality of this confrontation that seems endless, claiming innocent lives amidst their struggle for control of the territory.
