New Selection Process for Attorney General in Mexico City

In Morena, a process has begun that could culminate in early December with the selection of the new head of the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City. This process started with the opening of candidate registration before the Citizen Judicial Council. This body will be responsible for carrying out the selection of the candidates, who will then be voted on by the full assembly of the Palacio de Donceles with at least two-thirds of the present votes.

The head of the Attorney General's Office is a position of great importance and is expected to generate tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. According to sources, the candidate registration process will last until November 9. Morena claims that a careful process will be carried out to avoid possible discussions that may hinder the election in the Palacio de Donceles.

At the moment, no confirmed figure has been mentioned to occupy the position, but Bertha María Alcalde, former head of ISSSTE, is noted as a possible candidate with the backing of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch. The local Congress will have the final word in selecting the person who will succeed the current attorney, Ulises Lara.

The ruling parliamentary group has raised the need to initiate talks with Clara Brugada to define the next steps in the selection process. They seek to avoid the problems that arose during the re-election process of Ernestina Godoy as legal advisor to the Presidency.

It is expected that the 4T will have the necessary votes to ensure the appointment of the new head of the Attorney General's Office, so it will not depend on the opposition. The work of Xóchitl Bravo and Martha Ávila in the ruling coordination stands out.

This selection process is taking place in an environment where the Third Legislature of the local Congress of CDMX has started without significant upheaval.
