Amparo Trial Under Threat in Mexico

The Amparo Trial in Mexico is facing significant threats as recent reforms could undermine judicial review and the protection of citizen rights. Protests have erupted as legal professionals defend judicial autonomy and the democratic foundations of the country.

Amparo Trial Under Threat in Mexico

The Amparo Trial in Mexico, which has been a pillar of justice for more than 160 years, is in danger. The reform driven by the majority parliamentary group in the Senate suggests eliminating the possibility of challenging constitutional reforms through this mechanism, which could allow decisions from Congress without corresponding judicial oversight, thus weakening the balance of powers in the country.

The National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges of the Judiciary of the Federation (Jufed) has called on authorities to respect the right to free expression. This call comes after protesters were surrounded by police at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, where they were protesting the reform to the Judiciary. Jufed condemned the use of institutional violence against peaceful demonstrators and highlighted the increase in governmental intolerance, which contradicts the democratic principles they claim to defend.

On the other hand, the Employers' Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) has expressed concern over the reform approved by the Senate of the Republic, considering it a direct threat to the balance of powers and citizens' rights. This initiative would give the Legislative Power the authority to modify the Constitution without the possibility of judicial review, putting at risk the fundamental guarantees that have protected citizens for decades. Coparmex emphasizes its commitment to the rule of law and the protection of individual guarantees as the pillars of its work.
