Judge Marlen Ángeles was detained by agents of the Citizen Security Secretariat while participating in a peaceful demonstration outside the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome. In a subsequent press conference, she expressed her surprise at the intense security deployment before the Mexico Grand Prix and suggested that such operations would be more useful in places like Culiacán, where the population lives in constant fear.
Ángeles Tovar, the judge seen in the viral photo surrounded by security agents, emphasized the need to allocate security resources to other areas. She criticized the police cordon around peaceful protesters and questioned the use of force in these situations, stating that public security should address the real needs of citizens.
In another context, the president of the Supreme Court, Norma Piña, expressed her solidarity with the judges and judiciary staff who were 'encapsulated' during the protest at the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome. During a conference at the UNAM Law School, Piña warned about the danger of such actions leading to authoritarian attitudes.
Piña highlighted the importance of respecting those who dedicate their lives to defending the Constitution and the rights of others. She referred to the more than 800 amendments that have been made to the Constitution and discussed the work of academics on the stability and legitimacy of those changes. She asserted that while it is necessary to adapt to social changes, excessive flexibility in constitutional amendments can undermine their stability and legitimacy.
