The National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) announced a 24-hour strike and a nationwide mobilization, concentrating in some streets of Mexico City next Wednesday, October 30.
The National Strike aims primarily to demand the repeal of the educational reform enacted by Peña Nieto and repealed by former president AMLO. The CNTE reaffirms its position against the labor exception regime and questions the legitimacy of the reform. In a statement, they expressed: “The CNTE firmly reiterates its demand for the total repeal of the misnamed educational reform PEÑA-AMLO and demands the elimination of the labor exception regime contained in Article 3 of the constitution.”
In a meeting between authorities from the CNTE and the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) on Monday, October 28, the dismantling of the Unit of the System for the Career of Teachers (Usicamm) was agreed upon, an agency criticized for its system of admitting new teachers. The CNTE reiterated its commitment to defending education, labor rights, and the principles of political and ideological independence of the State.
The mobilization will begin at the Angel of Independence and will travel along Paseo de la Reforma, heading towards the streets of Alameda Central until reaching the Historic Center. The scheduled time is at 10:00 in the morning, extending until the conclusion of the negotiation table with president Claudia Sheinbaum.
