During the past weekend, several violent events were recorded in the Morelos neighborhood in the Venustiano Carranza municipality of Mexico City. Five people were murdered, raising concern in the community and among local authorities.
One of the victims was Angelo Méndez, 19 years old, allegedly a member of La Unión Tepito, who was shot while in his car on Sunday by hitmen. Additionally, on Friday, cousins Axel Atiencia, 20 years old, and Manuel Maya, 18, who are presumed to be members of La Anti-Unión Tepito, lost their lives in a tenement on Mineros Street.
In response to this wave of violence, authorities have conducted operations in the Morelos neighborhood since the end of October with the aim of reducing crime in the area. Young people, many of them minors, are involved in different criminal groups, such as La Unión Tepito and Anti-Unión Tepito, which have been involved in a dispute that has led to a significant increase in homicide rates in the capital.
In addition to the fatal incidents, several young people have been detained, including 17-year-old Johan Gael González, and some of his companions who have been identified as hitmen. These reactive measures by authorities aim to contain the violence in the area and prevent more lives from being affected by this growing problem.
