Smart Traffic Lights Initiative in Mexico City

The proposal to modernize traffic lights in Mexico City aims to optimize flow, improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and reduce emissions through intelligent synchronization.

Smart Traffic Lights Initiative in Mexico City

Deputy Víctor Hugo Romo presented an initiative to modernize the traffic light system in Mexico City, following the proposal from the Head of Government, Clara Brugada. The proposal aims to implement intelligent traffic lights that adjust the timing of signals in real-time according to vehicular and pedestrian flow.

In the capital Congress, the Morena deputy explained that the initiative aims to reduce congestion, improve vehicular flow, and ensure safety for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as decrease accidents and harmful emissions. It was highlighted that the current traffic light system does not adapt to real traffic conditions, creating congestion, delays, and pollution in Mexico City.

It is proposed to implement intelligent traffic light synchronization, use digital simulation to evaluate traffic, and give priority to public transport and emergency vehicles. The importance of universal accessibility is emphasized, with signs for people with disabilities and specialized crossing times for the elderly and people with reduced mobility.

Examples of cities where intelligent traffic light systems have been successful were mentioned, such as Bogotá, Arequipa, and São Paulo. These cases showed a reduction in travel times, decreased harmful emissions, and improvements in speed and vehicular congestion.

Finally, it was highlighted that the intelligent traffic light initiative will allow Mexico City to align with international standards in urban mobility and energy efficiency, improving traffic, safety, and environmental sustainability in the city.
