New Evaluation Committee Formed in Mexico City

The Evaluation Committee for the election of judges for next year will be formed with a gender perspective, requiring its members to have at least five years of experience in judicial activity. Additionally, the members must be of Mexican nationality and hold a bachelor's degree in Law, and they must not have held national or state leadership positions within any political party.

Maribel Concepción Méndez, who studied law at the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas and has a Master's degree in Public Management from CIDE, will lead the evaluation process. Her main responsibility will be to determine whether the candidates meet the constitutional and legal requirements, identifying the best qualified to occupy these judicial positions.

The Committee will be made up of five people appointed by the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Powers. So far, only the Legislative Power has approved its representatives. Both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate approved their five members on October 29. These proposals will join those endorsed by President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Superior Chamber of the Supreme Court to complete the Evaluation Committee.

The Evaluation Committee will receive applications from those wishing to participate in the electoral process of the Judiciary for next year. The final composition of this committee will be defined on October 31. Among the proposed individuals are figures like Maribel Concepción Méndez, Ana Patricia Briseño Torres, María Gabriela Sánchez García, Maday Merino Damián, and Andrés García Repper. The President of the Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, announced that these members will take an oath in the Plenary of the Upper Chamber on the mentioned date.

Maribel Concepción Méndez has an extensive background in the judicial field, having been previously proposed to occupy positions such as magistrate in the Agrarian Superior Court and advisor in the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute in Sonora.

Ana Patricia Briseño Torres, for her part, was appointed president of the ISTAI Commission in 2023, assuming the important role following her participation in the Electoral Institute of Tamaulipas.
