Threat Against Journalist Highlights Crime Risks in Mexico City

Journalist Carlos Jiménez, known on social media as "C4 Jiménez," revealed that he received a death threat via a social network, in which a couple of young individuals allegedly linked to the criminal group La Anti-Unión sent him an intimidating message. In the publication shared by the journalist, two individuals identified as Afady and Kendo, with covered faces and armed, are seen directing a direct threat at Jiménez. This incident triggered the formation of the criminal cell called Fuerza Anti-Unión, led by Jorge Flores Conchas, alias "El Tortas," which became known in the media after a disturbing discovery in July 2018 when two dismembered bodies were found on Avenida Insurgentes Norte.

The threat has arisen in a context where the journalist has been providing intensive coverage on the criminal groups operating in Tepito and other areas of Mexico City. The threat, which directly relates to his journalistic work on organized crime, raises questions about the security of communicators in the country, particularly those conducting investigations and reports on high-impact criminal groups, which has placed Jiménez in the spotlight of authorities.

La Anti-Unión Tepito emerged due to the constant conflicts between merchants in the area and La Unión Tepito, a group that demanded extortion payments from businesses in key locations in the Historical Center of Mexico City. In 2017, overwhelmed by the abuses, some entrepreneurs opted to hire hitmen to eliminate the extortionists instead of continuing to yield to illegal charges.

So far, the authorities in the Mexican capital have not commented on the threat received by the journalist. In October 2024, Jiménez revealed an alleged alliance between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and La Anti-Unión Tepito to challenge La Unión Tepito, aiming to control extortion and drug sales activities in the Morelos neighborhood of the Venustiano Carranza mayoralty.
