Tragic Death of Activist's Cousin in Shooting Incident

On Monday, Carlos David Núñez passed away, cousin of Diana Sánchez Barrios, local deputy and leader of street vendors in downtown Mexico City. Núñez suffered complications due to wounds caused by two gunshots during an attack in which Sánchez Barrios was also injured on October 17, a tragic event that claimed another person's life.

According to national media quoting sources close to the family, Núñez underwent surgery on Monday morning at the MED Medical Center, where he apparently suffered a heart attack. Previously, he had already undergone surgery twice due to the severity of his injuries, losing a kidney and the spleen in the process. One of the bullets had lodged in his spinal cord, putting his ability to walk at risk.

The attack in which Núñez was injured and which cost another person's life occurred on October 17 in the Historic Center of Mexico City, on Motolinía Street. Despite being shot, Sánchez Barrios managed to take refuge in a nearby store and survive.

On November 6, the capital authorities announced the arrest of the two presumed perpetrators of the attack against the deputy, Gael Héctor 'N' and Iván Aldair 'N', the latter identified as the one responsible for firing the shots. Shaneli 'N' was also arrested in Venustiano Carranza, accused of participating in the planning and execution of the attack.

Diana's mother, Alejandra Barrios Richard, also a substitute deputy and prominent figure in the merchants' field in the capital's center, blamed the criminal group La Unión Tepito for the attack against her daughter, attributing the act to elements of that organization.
