The recent helicopter flight of the coordinator of the Morena bench in the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal, has generated controversy and criticism regarding the principles of republican austerity promoted by the Fourth Transformation (4T). The helicopter used, an Agusta AW-109SP model of Italian manufacturing common in executive transfers, has an approximate cost of 5,100 dollars per flight, that is, more than 90,000 pesos per trip.
Monreal boarded this aircraft on November 12 to head to San Lázaro, sparking a discussion about the consistency between this act and the federal government's austerity discourse. Stating that no public funds were used for his trip, Monreal has mentioned that in emergency situations he receives "rides" from friends, justifying the use of the helicopter in this category.
Claudia Sheinbaum supported Monreal, asserting that no public resources were spent on the flight, although she emphasized the importance of members of the 4T acting in accordance with the principles of the movement. Monreal stressed that the flight was not unusual and that these helicopter transfers are conducted in urgent cases, maintaining the stance that he acted within legal and ethical limits.
Despite Monreal's insistence and that of other Morena members that there were no improper uses of public funds, controversy persists as it undermines the austerity norms that the 4T administration defends. The use of the helicopter in this situation represents a challenge to the transparency and efficiency of the governmental practices promoted by the current government.
