The countdown to the start of the 2026 World Cup has reached 400 days, and with the soccer fever so close, the Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, has decided to announce her 'World Cup City' project. In this project, Brugada revealed important details, such as the date for the re-inauguration of the Azteca Stadium.
Currently, the iconic stadium, which has hosted the World Cup twice, is undergoing renovations to prepare it for the upcoming sporting event. The work has intensified to be completed before the event, following the example of its great rival in sports matters.
The re-inauguration date for the Azteca Stadium has changed three times, with the most recent change announced by Clara Brugada. According to the Head of Government of Mexico City, the venue will open its doors in March 2026. Although no further details were provided in the announcement, it had previously been mentioned that the Mexican national team would play at this stadium against a select team before closing until June 11.
The renovation of the Azteca Stadium has required an investment of over 2 billion pesos and focuses on making interior changes without altering the original structure of the venue. Among the improvements is the increase in capacity by replacing rigid seats with folding ones and relocating the dressing rooms. Additionally, there are plans to construct a three-story building within the lateral stands and create a new hospitality area.
On the exterior, the giant screen has been ruled out for logistical reasons, opting instead for an LED strip that will be located at the top and in the center of the stadium for advertising purposes.
