The Azteca Stadium has been under construction for several months to host the inaugural match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the Mexican national team will face an opponent. The Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, established the City Committee for the event 400 days before its inauguration, which will be held together with the United States and Canada.

At an event attended by FIFA authorities and former footballers such as Miguel Layún, Clara Brugada emphasized the importance of football as a popular sport and recalled that the ball game was played in Mesoamerica, a tradition that spread across the world. The leader highlighted that Mexico City, with its history and size, is ready to host the World Cup and continues to prepare to be an exemplary venue.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will feature 104 matches across 3 countries and 15 cities, including Mexico City, where matches will be held from June 11 to July 5. During the installation of the Committee for the World Cup, what could be the event's mascot was presented. Additionally, various construction works and mobility projects in the city were announced in preparation for the tournament.

Clara Brugada mentioned that the water well of the Azteca Stadium was delivered to the capital government and that infrastructure work will be carried out to prevent flooding in areas near the stadium. Urban regeneration and revitalization projects in neighborhoods around the sports venue will also be conducted.

Furthermore, the director of the Azteca Stadium reported that the rehabilitation and remodeling work of the venue is progressing satisfactorily and assured that it will be ready for the FIFA World Cup 2026, although no exact reopening date was provided. This will be the third time the Azteca Stadium hosts a World Cup, after 1970 and 1986.
