Mexico City Successfully Hosts Match at Azteca Stadium

Head of the Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, assured that the reopening of the Azteca Stadium, which took place this Saturday between the Mexican and Portugal national teams, had a "favorable balance" as the expectations that the authorities had projected beforehand were met. As detailed by LPO, the authorities of Mexico City implemented, for the first time in history, a security and mobility device to ensure that arrivals at the Azteca Stadium occurred via public transport to promote this type of mobility, discourage the use of cars, and generate easier-to-control conditions. This Monday, the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, received the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino. Following the draw between Mexico and Portugal, Brugada stated that the operation "was carried out satisfactorily" and highlighted that "no incident occurred that would have required the rapid action of the authorities." In this way, she defended the work done by her department despite some criticisms that arose on social networks due to delays in entering the stadium. "We passed the test, the city is ready," added the Head of Government, who views the World Cup as one of the most important moments of her administration. In this regard, she stated that the national capital "is ready" to receive the 2026 FIFA World Cup starting June 11, when the national team faces South Africa at the opening of the sporting event. In this regard, the Head of Government declared that the capital's authorities are responsible for what happens around the field and that access to the stadium itself falls under the responsibility of its authorities. In turn, the Secretary of Security, Pablo Vázquez Camacho, stated that the operation left a "positive balance" that will allow the central government to improve coordination and work in terms of security and mobility during the World Cup. He also confirmed that starting in the coming days, a daily working table will be set up with the representation of FIFA in CDMX and the stadium authorities to improve the points considered based on the experience of Monday and accelerate the work towards June. Finally, Brugada informed that she had a "positive" meeting with the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, with whom they discussed Saturday's match and the security and mobility operations that will be implemented during the World Cup. She also reported that 17 people were detained for ticket resale in the vicinity of the match and detailed that the prosecutor of CDMX, Bertha Alcalde, is leading the investigations to determine the circumstances in which a person died in the box area in a state of intoxication. With an eye on the World Cup, Brugada inaugurated new works in Coyoacán. In this regard, Brugada stated that alcohol consumption is a "risk" for the authorities, so she announced that in the coming weeks a comprehensive campaign will be launched that seeks to discourage its consumption in homes, parties, and matches that occur during the world championship. "What we proposed happened," declared the former mayor of Iztapalapa at a press conference with part of her cabinet. "The balance is favorable."
