Estadio Azteca will be the first stadium to host three opening matches of a World Cup, which will take place starting June 11, 2026. Gabriela Cuevas Barrón, born on November 3, 1979, in Mexico City, is the new representative of the Mexican government for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Gabriela Cuevas as the governmental representative and detailed that, together with the Ministry of Tourism, led by Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, she will be in charge of World Cup matters. Sheinbaum mentioned that Cuevas will be appointed to represent Mexico in various institutions and handle issues related to the world's most important sporting event.
In Mexico City, Estadio Azteca will host three group stage matches and two final stage matches, being a host for the tournament for the third time. Cuevas expressed her gratitude for the designation through her social media. 'The 2026 World Cup will bring more well-being for the entire Republic,' she wrote. She has extensive political experience and has held significant roles in the National Action Party (PAN) and the Ministry of the Interior.
In addition to Estadio Azteca, FIFA announced that Estadio Akron and Estadio BBVA will host several World Cup matches. Cuevas thanked the president for her vote of confidence and emphasized that activities related to the event will not be limited exclusively to the stadiums but will extend to communities beyond the main venues, reaching towns, neighborhoods, and colonies throughout Mexico. The 2026 World Cup will begin in Mexico, one of the three host countries in North America.
