In her morning conference today, President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the topic of the Mexico-Nuevo Laredo passenger train and suggested the possible name "Gulf of Mexico Train" when questioned about the project. It was reported that this national project will be carried out in four phases, with the first being the AIFA-Pachuca, Mexico-Querétaro, Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo, and Querétaro-Irapuato routes.
The president mentioned the proposed name with a laugh, which could be interpreted as a hint related to the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and the proximity of Nuevo Laredo to the border. On the other hand, it was learned that the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, has shown his willingness since September 2024 to collaborate on this railway project, which includes the construction of a passenger train from Laredo to Mexico City, passing through Monterrey and San Luis Potosí.
During her conference, the president clarified that the Mexico-Nuevo Laredo train will have dedicated and new lines, ruling out sharing tracks with the Kansas City company in the capital. She also mentioned that Kansas City will inaugurate a bridge in Nuevo Laredo for freight rail, connecting from central Mexico to Canada.
In a previous intervention, President Sheinbaum, accompanied by the Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport (SICT) Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, stated that during this term a network of trains will be built that will cross Mexican territory, including various projects for passenger and freight trains that will start next year. Among the considered routes is the aforementioned Mexico-Nuevo Laredo.
