Disappearance of Activist in Oaxaca: Investigations Underway

The Attorney General of Oaxaca is investigating the disappearance of activist Sandra Domínguez and her husband amid an armed attack during an operation. Weapons have been secured and operations are being conducted to achieve justice.


Disappearance of Activist in Oaxaca: Investigations Underway

Oaxaca authorities seized high-caliber long guns used in an attack against security elements in collaboration with different levels of government to improve the pursuit of justice. Activist Sandra Domínguez, a lawyer and Ayuujk defender, disappeared along with her husband after receiving threats for the cases she defended. Her truck was found on the borders of Oaxaca and Veracruz.

Sandra Estefana Domínguez Martínez reported harassment and shared WhatsApp chats that revealed inappropriate conduct by officials towards indigenous women. She disappeared on October 4 in the community of María Lombardo, in San Juan Cotzocón, Oaxaca. During an operation in Veracruz related to her disappearance, agents were fired upon, resulting in one federal agent dead and another injured. The federal security secretary reported that three attackers died, including the presumed kidnapper of Sandra Domínguez.

The Oaxaca Prosecutor's Office and the Security Secretariat have not provided information about the whereabouts of the activist. During the operation in Veracruz, a confrontation occurred that resulted in the deaths of three attackers, including the leader of the criminal cell. One federal agent also lost his life, and another was injured in the shooting. Authorities have not offered further information about the case.
