Demolition of Historic House in Pesquería

An irregular action has shaken the municipality of Pesquería: the demolition of a historic house protected by the Federal Government. The operation was ordered by Mayor Francisco Esquivel of the Citizens' Movement (MC), without authorization from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The property, located at the corner of Morelos and Porfirio Díaz streets, in the heart of the municipality, was part of the cataloged cultural heritage. The building, over 100 years old, was known as 'La Casa de Doña Coquito.' The mayor ordered the use of heavy machinery to demolish the house, ignoring that any modification or demolition of this type of construction requires prior validation from federal authorities. During the demolition, the mayor acknowledged that it was a historic house for the municipality. 'I remember there was a stall here where I came as a child for fried food and sodas,' he said. Legal and cultural affront Martha Elda Ávalos, INAH delegate in Nuevo León, demanded immediate explanations for what she described as a legal and cultural affront. In a statement, the Institute warned that this action not only represents an irreparable loss for the municipality's identity but also violates current legislation on the conservation of cultural heritage. INAH announced that the legal consequences of the case will be analyzed, which could lead to administrative sanctions and even criminal penalties, as it is a suspected federal crime that could be referred to the Attorney General's Office (FGR). According to neighbors, the building was demolished to build a parking lot or offices.
