Devastating Fire Destroys Businesses in Puerto Escondido

An intense fire that broke out early Friday morning consumed dozens of commercial establishments, including restaurants, cabins, shops, and some homes in the tourist area of Punta Zicatela, in Puerto Escondido, belonging to Santa María Colotepec, Oaxaca. This disaster occurred just days before the start of Holy Week, one of the most important seasons for merchants, who are now concerned about how to recover after losing everything. According to witnesses, the fire started after 1 a.m. and spread rapidly because most restaurant and palapa roofs were made of dry palm, which allowed the fire to advance uncontrollably until it consumed them. Without knowing the cause of the fire, merchants stated that a phone call alerted them, so they immediately requested help from firefighters, who extinguished the fire this morning. Civil Protection of Puerto Escondido ruled out any injured or missing persons, and only significant material losses are reported in one of the most visited tourist areas of Puerto Escondido. The mayor of Santa María Colotepec, Román Valencia, reported that a total of 40 cabins were affected, plus 15 shops, as well as 20 commercial premises and 15 palapas consumed by this fire. Punta Zicatela is considered one of the most touristy areas of Puerto Escondido, ideal for beginner surfers, swimmers, and sunset lovers. Service providers asked the government of Oaxaca and federal authorities for help to begin rebuilding their assets before Easter vacations begin.
