
The former municipal mayor of San Pedro Mixtepec, Oaxaca, Javier Cruz, was shot dead in Puerto Escondido on the morning of Monday, March 17, according to the State Attorney General's Office. The incident occurred near the Delfines bus terminals in the Agua Marina subdivision on the Oaxaca coast. Cruz received several gunshot wounds, and despite attempts to provide first aid, he was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries.
Local authorities cordoned off the area and began searches to find those responsible for the attack. An investigation has been initiated by a multidisciplinary team from the Vice Prosecutor's Office on the Coast with the aim of identifying both the intellectual and material authors of this homicide.
Javier Cruz completed his term as mayor of San Pedro Mixtepec on December 31, 2024, and also served as the president of the Comunales (Common Goods) of this locality.
