The body of priest Marcelo Pérez was transferred to the Church of Guadalupe, where he served as pastor. Hundreds of parishioners with "peace" flags accompanied the funeral procession from the Chiapas Prosecutor's Office to the church. On Sunday morning, indigenous Tsotsil priest Marcelo Pérez Pérez was murdered after officiating a mass in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.
He was attacked in his vehicle after being a promoter of peace processes in Pantelhó, which had exposed him to death threats, defamations, and a warrant for his arrest. Due to these threats, the Diocese decided to move him to the parish of Guadalupe in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, from where he continued his work in peace processes and denouncing the situation in Chiapas.
In the region, the population suffers from the conflict between an armed group and self-defense forces, especially since the increase in violence in July 2021.
