Sheinbaum Criticizes Governor's Wife Candidacy

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her disagreement with the candidacy of Ruth González for governor of San Luis Potosí. She stated that if González were to win, she would succeed her husband, the current governor Ricardo Gallardo. Sheinbaum said she does not think it is right for relatives to take office in the immediate term. "You know that I am not in agreement," she said. The Mexican Constitution states that from 2030 onwards, relatives cannot hold popularly elected offices for the immediate subsequent term. In the Morena party, this rule is enshrined in its statutes and is set to take effect in 2027. In response, the coordinator of senators from the Green Party, Manuel Velasco, put forward González's candidacy for governor, claiming she has an advantage in polls. This practice, which the Morena party seeks to eradicate, is fueling tensions ahead of electoral reform. "Without a doubt, she will be governor," said Velasco, citing the power her party concentrates in the state. Under this scenario, González herself has said in the past that she would explore running in a coalition or alone. Meanwhile, the Morena party has two other candidates: Rita Ozalia and Rosa Icela Rodríguez.
