Fire in San Luis de la Paz Causes Virtual Classes

Authorities continue to investigate the causes of the fire at the landfill in San Luis de la Paz, while they work hard to extinguish the flames and minimize environmental impacts. The Guanajuato Secretariat of Education has decided to implement virtual classes due to the poor air quality caused by this incident, with the aim of protecting the health of minors and preventing them from being exposed to contaminated air.

Starting Wednesday, November 13, public and private schools of all educational levels in San Luis de la Paz will switch to online mode. It is estimated that more than 30,000 liters of water have been used in the firefighting efforts, which required the collaboration of various entities such as Civil Protection, Fire Departments, Volunteer Paramedics, Municipal Traffic, Public Security, and the National Guard.

The incident, which was intentionally generated, has been particularly challenging due to the large amount of waste accumulated at the landfill, which has complicated firefighting tasks and created a dense gray smoke haze that has spread throughout the municipality. In light of this situation, the Guanajuato Secretariat of the Environment has issued a warning to the population, recommending avoiding outdoor activities, staying away from the affected area, and taking precautions not to inhale toxic smoke.

Despite the continuous efforts of firefighters and emergency teams, the fire has not yet been fully controlled as of Tuesday night. The fire, which began on Saturday, November 9, at the landfill in San Luis de la Paz, in the community of Corazón de Jesús, continues to pose a challenge for local authorities.
