President Claudia Sheinbaum led her morning conference on Monday, May 5, 2025, accompanied by Iván Escalante, head of the Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco), Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy, Luz Elena González, Secretary of Energy, and Edgar Amador, head of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit.

After the President of the United States, Donald Trump, claimed that Claudia Sheinbaum fears drug cartels, the president responded to these statements by saying: "Let's leave it at that so there won't be a debate through the media. I wouldn't want communication between presidents to go through media statements; we are continuously dialoguing."

Sheinbaum denied that the water agreement with the United States was made out of fear of Trump's tariffs, explaining that it fulfilled the 1944 Water Treaty and that achieving it was complicated due to the drought. She highlighted the technical work done by both governments to define the details of the water delivery.

The president also commented on the new tariff imposed by Trump on foreign films, pointing out the need to analyze its impact on the film industry and digital platforms, in addition to reiterating support for national cinema.

Regarding the detention of the mayor of Teuchitlán in the Izaguirre ranch case, Sheinbaum explained that the Attorney General's Office of the Republic will carry out the investigations and will be responsible for reporting on progress.

Another measure mentioned in the conference was the implementation of reference prices on products such as furniture, toys, sports articles, paper, and cardboard, aiming to prevent tax evasion and protect compliant companies, which will be expanded in the coming months.

For his part, Iván Escalante, head of Profeco, reported on a gas station in the State of Mexico that maintains low prices while respecting the established price limit, and other stations with competitive prices in different states of Mexico were mentioned.

Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard announced the cancellation of steel imports due to irregularities in the registration of producers, with the disincorporation of mills that are non-compliant in the coming days.

Finally, regarding basic basket prices, it was reported that HEB was flagged by Profeco for exceeding average costs, highlighting that Chedraui Poliforum in León, Guanajuato, offered the basic basket at a lower price.
