The waste generated at the San Pedro Cholula landfill will be officially redirected to three municipalities, including the capital of Puebla, while the process for its relocation continues, which will be handled by the next administration of Alejandro Armenta Mier. Javier Aquino Limón, head of the Secretariat of Governance (Segob), reported that the concessionaire Profaj Hidro Limpieza SA de CV is evaluating technical and financial aspects to find a viable solution for the relocation of the landfill.
The official revealed that there are two possible locations for the new landfill: one near the current site in Chiltepeque and another to the east of the state. Aquino Limón explained that the company has been instructed to remain in areas close to those suggested by the government, in order to minimize the transportation costs for the municipalities that currently deposit their waste in Chiltepeque. 'The goal is for the involved municipalities not to have to incur excessive costs due to long transfers. That’s why a location closer to their current location is being sought,' he detailed.
The secretary indicated that the procedures for the relocation will be resolved this year, but the definitive installation of the new landfill will take place next year, as time is required to prepare the selected land.
Where does the waste from the closed landfill go? In the meantime, the municipalities that previously deposited their waste at the San Pedro Cholula landfill will continue to use the landfills of Chiltepeque, San José Chiapa, and San Martín Texmelucan, to which they have been temporarily assigned. It is worth remembering that on August 22, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) permanently closed the San Pedro Cholula landfill after several violations of environmental regulations.
