Justice for Cecilia Monzón: Trial Approaches

The Third Collegiate Court in Criminal Matters of the Sixth Circuit, based in San Andrés Cholula, has rejected the amparo requested by the defense of Javier López Zavala, former secretary of the interior, who is being prosecuted for the murder of Cecilia Monzón. The amparo request was dismissed to avoid the oral trial for the murder of Monzón, which occurred in May 2022.

The court's decision will be notified to the Criminal Oral and Execution Court of the Central Judicial Region in Puebla, which will lead to the opening of the oral trial for the feminicide of Cecilia Monzón. Helena Monzón, sister of the victim, expressed her confidence in the work that the Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Puebla will carry out, stating that "now the time for justice has come."

Cecilia Monzón was a lawyer and women's rights activist, recognized for her work defending women in custody and child support cases. She was a candidate for the Green Party of Mexico for the municipal presidency of San Pedro Cholula in 2018 and head of Social Development in the administration of Luis Alberto Arriaga. She worked on cases of women victims of violence and domestic abuse and was facing legal proceedings for child support against Javier López Zavala, with whom she had a son.

Cecilia Monzón's family, with the oral trial allowed, will seek to condemn the accused as the intellectual author of the murder and the material authors to 60 years of prison each, the maximum penalty in the Puebla Penal Code. Despite procedural obstacles, justice for the murder of Monzón is expected to be finally served.
