Santa Catarina Mayor Appoints Controversial Businessman to Cabinet

The mayor of Santa Catarina, Jesús Nava, announced that he has integrated the controversial businessman and former PAN member, Marcial Herrera, into his cabinet. "We are going to work hard for Santa Catarina, which has given us so much, 33 years of being here in Santa Catarina. But right now my commitment is to help without asking for anything in return, we are not asking for a council seat, nor the mayoralty, nor a deputyship, nor anything," the businessman said during his presentation. "I wake up here, I run here, I do my exercises here, I stay in a little house I have on the ranch, and suddenly on weekends I go there with my wife to her house, we are from here," he added. In various municipalities, the idea that a gender quota would complicate the upcoming elections has taken hold, and in Nava Rivera's circle it is no exception, which is why he is now pushing Marcial into a secretariat that has functions to deliver support to citizens. Although for months he had been focused on an intense advanced campaign in favor of another former PAN member, Elizabeth Galicia - mainly due to gender pressure and the anti-nepotism rule in Morena - the current DIF director has not been able to gain traction in internal polls. They also do not rule out that, in case another profile is prioritized in the succession, Marcial Herrera could be promoted by Morena in the federal District 1, which competes for part of Santa Catarina and San Pedro. They consider that he would be an important campaign accompaniment figure, also because in that area there has never been competition for the PAN, where the last winner was Homero Niño de Rivera. "The most important thing right now is to see the needs of the people of Santa Catarina, if the people tomorrow or the day after decide 'come Marcial', and the family and they want it, with pleasure," he said. This would reinforce his structure in the municipality and responds to various doubts about his succession. Herrera's appointment was even uncomfortable and surprising within the Santa Catarina administration, as it was in a recently created position: the Directorate of Management and Citizen Attention. The sampetrino did not rule out running for the mayorship, after breaking with the PAN in San Pedro and only passing through MC in previous campaigns.
