Political Struggles for Santa Catarina Mayor

Jesús Nava, the mayor of Santa Catarina, faces political setbacks after switching to Morena, including rejection of his tax hike request and challenges for public accounts approval.

Political Struggles for Santa Catarina Mayor

The mayor of Santa Catarina, Jesús Nava, recently switched political parties, moving from Movimiento Ciudadano to Morena. However, this decision is proving costly in political terms, as his request for an increase in property tax has been rejected, and the approval of public accounts for the upcoming year is in jeopardy.

Nava Rivera requested a 25% increase in property tax, a request he made while still a member of MC. Despite Morena being willing to support him on this issue, the PRI, PAN, and MC are avoiding giving a favorable response to this request. These parties argue that it is necessary to first address the financial irregularities amounting to nearly 800 million pesos, according to the Superior Audit Office of the State, that have been detected in Santa Catarina over the past year.

In the absence of political allies in the municipality, Jesús Nava has reached out to Francisco Cienfuegos and Adrián de la Garza, with whom he maintains a cordial relationship, in an attempt to seek support to end the year positively. However, the opposition and MC have rejected his proposal, as well as Morena's stance of avoiding any increase in public taxes.

Morena deputies have informed their mayors that they will not support any increase in property tax. Despite this, Andrés Mijes and Manuel Guerra maintain a stable relationship with political actors from the Front and those close to the governor. Given this situation, Nava Rivera's team sees the approval of public accounts and the budget request for the year's end as complicated, and they hope to convince local legislators to obtain their approval.
