First Case of mpox Reported in Santa María Huatulco

The Health Services of Oaxaca (SSO) have reported a case of a person diagnosed with mpox, also known as systemic smallpox. The individual, a 26-year-old man, sought medical attention at the General Hospital of Zone number 41 of the IMSS in Santa Cruz Huatulco on February 20 due to symptoms such as fever, headache, cephalocaudal rash, and ulcers.

After conducting tests that confirmed the presence of the disease, the necessary protocols were implemented. So far, no other patients with mpox have been identified. It is important to highlight that the Condesa Specialized Clinics have urged individuals presenting symptoms of the disease to visit their facilities, regardless of whether they have social security.

Case monitoring continues in the Coastal region, with an emphasis on epidemiological surveillance in both fixed and mobile medical units. The use of condoms is being promoted as a preventive measure against Sexually Transmitted Infections, and the availability of condoms in health centers has been increased.

Specific preventive measures to avoid the spread of mpox include avoiding physical contact with infected individuals, frequently washing hands, covering oneself when coughing or sneezing, not sharing personal items, wearing face masks, and regularly disinfecting surfaces. In case of symptoms, individuals are advised to stay isolated at home and seek medical attention for timely treatment.

It has been observed that some cases of mpox are related to attendance at a festival in Zipolite between January 31 and February 3. It is emphasized that if symptoms have not manifested, there is no risk of infection after a maximum incubation period of 21 days.
