Governor of Zacatecas Booed at President Sheinbaum's Event

During an event in Sombrerete, Zacatecas, President Claudia Sheinbaum presented the 'Bean Plan'. The governor, David Monreal, was booed by some attendees. Taking the stage, Sheinbaum stated, 'We love the governor of Zacatecas very much.' She highlighted the benefits of beans and announced the expansion of the procurement program in Zacatecas. 'Here, beans have been cultivated and eaten since time immemorial, even before the Spaniards came to take all the gold and silver, beans were already being grown,' she said. The booing of Governor Monreal occurred amid an internal dispute in Morena and its allies to define candidates for next year's election. Saúl Monreal, the governor's brother, is promoting his candidacy for governor and even claims to be the favorite for the next administration. Morena has approved a statute that prohibits relatives of those in elected office from running, to combat nepotism. Saúl Monreal argues he is not engaging in nepotism if he wins through the citizen vote. Recently, Luisa María Alcalde, national leader of Morena, affirmed that they will not support family members for elected office. Governor David Monreal was booed during the presentation of President Claudia Sheinbaum's 'Bean Plan' on Saturday, March 28. The jeers and complaints began when Monreal reproached previous governments for not supporting producers and stated that social programs were 'a business for a few,' although in the background the phrase 'it still is' was heard. 'There is no deception here, the support is direct and it is for the small and medium-sized producer, without intermediaries, without abuses, it is social justice,' said David Monreal. In the background, the slogan 'Out, out!' was heard, interrupting the governor's speech for a few seconds. He warned that the alliance with the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) and the Labor Party (PT) could be at risk if they nominate relatives. President Claudia Sheinbaum did not intervene in the expressions of discontent. She pointed out that although in other countries the term 'bean-eater' was used derogatorily, it is a millennium-old food. 'Over there they called us bean-eaters, and with great pride, we are bean-eaters,' she said.
