Crisis in Pemex: Corruption and Massive Debt

Octavio Romero's management at Pemex faces serious criticism for corruption and a debt of 25 billion dollars. Raquel Buenrostro is taking action at the SFP.

Crisis in Pemex: Corruption and Massive Debt

The management of Octavio Romero at Pemex has been described as a catastrophe at all levels, with accusations of supposed corruption generating controversy in the oil sector. These maneuvers were allegedly carried out from Pemex's offices in Tabasco, a territory that plays a crucial role in the immediate future of Morena and its national leader. On the other hand, Zoé Robledo maintains direct communication with Sheinbaum and is considered one of the leading candidates should adjustments in the cabinet be required.

One of the critical points is Pemex's overwhelming debt to suppliers amounting to 25 billion dollars. In the cabinet, sympathies seem to lean towards certain movements, with Rogelio Ramírez de la O being one of Romero's critics for unclear personal reasons, and the president initially showing reluctance towards the agronomist's presence in her team. However, López Obrador's pressure led to his placement at Infonavit.

Regarding the audit at Pemex, there is quiet speculation about possible sensitive issues related to figures like Andrés López Beltrán or General Audomaro Martínez. Raquel Buenrostro, at the head of the Secretariat of the Public Function, is advancing in consolidating a strong team that allows her to send a strong message to the other secretaries. In this respect, she has dismissed staff from the previous administration whom she considered unsuitable for her work.

Buenrostro sees her work as fundamental, as she perceives that, unlike the past, Claudia Sheinbaum would not face the same resistance as López Obrador in the face of potential corruption scandals. For this reason, the SFP has two initial clear objectives: Pemex and the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). The latter manages substantial funds to promote the IMSS Bienestar program.
