Mexican Influencer Sought for Kidnapping Woman

Veracruz, Mexico. In September 2024, the National Guard rescued a 63-year-old woman who, according to her testimony, had been held captive for years by influencer Jaime Pascual Hernández Toral, known as 'Jaime Toral Presenta'. The rescue was documented by local media, showing the woman in a state of evident weakness, accompanied by authorities. On his channel 'Jaime Toral Presenta', the influencer posted varied content, from regional gastronomy to interviews with people in vulnerable situations, whom he claimed to support. This was the same dynamic he maintained with Doña Lety, whom he filmed for several years. The Veracruz Prosecutor's Office has placed a bounty on the influencer's head, offering 350,000 pesos for information leading to his location. However, in September 2024, the situation took a dark turn when the National Guard rescued her in Tantoyuca, Veracruz. According to her testimony before the Regional Prosecutor's Office, 'He kept me locked up for years,' and she also stated that she suffered from a lack of food and water during her captivity. Despite her wanted poster being shared over 1,000 times on social media and being covered by local media, Toral remains at large, though he remains active on his digital platforms. Who is 'Doña Lety'? The heart of the accusation revolves around Leticia Gómez, known online as 'Doña Lety,' who went viral through Toral's videos. The public accusations are not new: in 2024, then-Governor Cuitláhuac García had already stated that the woman had been held by the 'YouTuber until she was rescued and liberated.' The YouTuber and TikToker, famous for his interviews with people in vulnerable situations, is wanted for his 'probable participation in the commission of the crime of human trafficking.' On Tuesday, October 28, the state agency made the formal announcement: 'The Prosecutor's General's Office will offer a reward to anyone who provides truthful, useful, effective, and timely information for the location, detention, or apprehension of Mr. Jaime Pascual Hernández Toral.' The 63-year-old woman, who usually appeared annoyed or sarcastic in the recordings, became a popular character during the pandemic. Doña Lety recounted that she managed to escape by taking advantage of a lapse in her captor's attention.
