Investigation Reveals Irregularities in Teotihuacán Balloon Tragedy

An investigation report of the hot air balloon accident in Teotihuacan revealed that the aircraft did not have a Mexican registration or authorization from the AFAC to fly in Mexico. Additionally, improper repairs were found on the balloon's envelope. After the accident, one of the passengers remained in the basket until it was completely incinerated.

In 2018, the company owning the balloon went bankrupt and ceased operations, making it difficult to trace the balloon's whereabouts. Both Czech and Slovenian civil aviation authorities were unaware that the balloon had been sold to Mexico. Nevertheless, it was emphasized that the new owners needed to obtain the necessary documents in Mexico before flying, which did not happen.

The accident report revealed that the balloon lacked emergency equipment, and the pilot was not prepared to face situations like the one described, which caused the balloon to ascend rapidly. Despite having permits to fly for seven years, the device was operated without following the proper regulations.

The document indicated that the validity of the airworthiness certificate in Slovenia had expired in 2014, and the balloon was retired a few years later. During the accident, two passengers jumped from the basket and survived, while another remained and died from burns and impact with the ground.

The final report cited a series of irregularities, such as the balloon entering without registration through Mexican customs, the lack of a pilot's license, the use of domestic gas tanks for fuel, and the presence of illegal hot air balloon travel businesses. The investigation held authorities accountable for omissions that contributed to the tragedy.
