In a coordinated operation by federal forces, Diego “N”, mayor of Tequila, and three mayors from the State of Mexico were arrested in Jalisco, reported the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch. Along with the Tequila mayor, three municipal officials were also arrested: the Director of Public Security, the Director of Cadastre and Property Tax, and the Director of Public Works. Through his official X account, García Harfuch stated that these actions are part of the National Strategy against Extortion and the fight against corruption, instructed by President Claudia Sheinbaum. Furthermore, the federal official mentioned that three mayors from the State of Mexico had previously been detained. So far, federal authorities have not specified the specific crimes attributed to the mayor or the other detained public officials, nor whether they have been presented to a judge. However, Operation Enjambre has focused on investigating possible corruption networks and illegal practices in municipal governments, based on citizen complaints and intelligence work. Investigations are ongoing, as federal authorities reiterated that they will continue operations against corruption and extortion structures at the local level. Details regarding the names and possible charges against the three mayors from the State of Mexico are expected to be released in the coming hours. Regarding the Tequila mayor, it is presumed that he is accused of alleged extortion schemes against beer and tequila companies in Jalisco, as well as his alleged ties to a cell of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). According to federal reports, Rivera Navarro leads a corruption network within the City Hall to extort local businesses and entrepreneurs, in addition to the misappropriation of public funds.
