Driver Arrested for Unauthorized Entry into Nevado de Toluca Protected Area

Federal authorities have made available to the Attorney General's Office of the Republic (FGR) a Razer-type vehicle and its driver for unauthorized entry into the core zone of the Flora and Fauna Protection Area of the Nevado de Toluca. According to a press release, this act constitutes an environmental crime under current legislation. The seizure was carried out on January 18, as a result of coordination between the State Police and the Federal Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa). According to the criteria of federal authorities, all Razer-type vehicles circulating within the Natural Protected Area must be detained. The vehicle entered and traveled within the core zone of the Nevado de Toluca without authorization from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), which caused the destruction of forest vegetation, the federal information points out. The turnover was carried out for acts provided for and sanctioned in section I of article 418 of the Federal Penal Code, which establishes penalties of six months to nine years in prison and a fine for whoever, without prior authorization from the competent authority, clears or destroys forest vegetation, provided that such activities are not carried out in urban areas. The State Police reported that the driver ignored instructions not to enter the Natural Protected Area and also attempted to run over a police officer. Faced with this situation, the turnover protocol was activated in coordination with FGR personnel, as well as with the legal and operational areas of Profepa, in order to timely and properly attend to the necessary requirements to continue with the corresponding procedure, both for the vehicle and the driver. On January 19, 2026, Profepa inspectors, in coordination with Ministerial Police and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp), went to the scene of the events to assess possible environmental damage and continue the procedure initiated before the FGR. According to federal information, this is the first time a person has been turned over for traveling in a Razer vehicle within the Flora and Fauna Protection Area of the Nevado de Toluca, which sets a precedent for the protection and surveillance of this Natural Protected Area.
