Controversial Legal Situation for Club Santos Owner

Club Santos Laguna reported that the judicial hearing in which the owner Alejandro Irarragorri Gutiérrez was involved was unexpectedly canceled by the Judge, who rescheduled the meeting for Monday, March 24. The club rejected any attempt at pressure and stated that it has acted in accordance with the Law at all times.

In a statement, Club Santos Laguna addressed the accusations against Irarragorri, indicating that they concern differences in the interpretation of tax regulations that could be resolved administratively, rather than being taken to criminal proceedings.

Irarragorri is a Mexican businessman who studied Business Administration at Anáhuac University. He is currently the president of the Board of Directors of Grupo Orlegi, the company that owns Club Santos Laguna and other sports entities. His son, Alejandro ‘Aleco’ Irarragorri Kalb, assumed the presidency of the club last October.

The accusations of tax fraud against Irarragorri amount to more than 17 billion pesos, related to irregular tax practices detected in the 2014 fiscal year.

In light of an arrest warrant against him, Club Santos Laguna clarified that Irarragorri was not formally notified and has complied with court appointments. The businessman’s legal situation has generated speculation about his whereabouts and his alleged status as a fugitive from justice.
