A hydrocarbon spill from a vessel in the Port of Veracruz has been successfully contained and cleaned up. Authorities collected 180 kg of contaminated material. A large-scale cleanup of Gulf of Mexico beaches is also ongoing after previous spills.

Hydrocarbon Spill Contained in Veracruz Port

A hydrocarbon spill occurred in the Port of Veracruz, which was contained and cleaned up, the Secretariat of the Navy reported. It indicated that 180 kilograms of contaminated material and absorbents were collected. In a press release, it detailed that it was the ship CMA CGM Moliere, docked at the Port of Veracruz, that had the spill. “It is reported that as part of the actions to respond to the presence of hydrocarbons in the port enclosure of Veracruz, naval personnel carried out reconnaissance and collection of contaminants in the vicinity of the vessel 'CMA CGM Moliere' docked at pier 14 of the Associated Container International Maritime Terminal of Veracruz,” it was stated. It specified that the spill was located due to stains and some iridescence on the water's surface, which led to the activation of the corresponding protocols. A maritime tour was carried out to assess the situation and carry out sanitation tasks. It was confirmed that the spill was located between 20 and 30 meters where the contaminant was, so work was done with absorbent materials to recover the hydrocarbon. “Inside these barriers, an accumulation of hydrocarbon was detected over an area of approximately 20 by 30 meters, proceeding with its recovery through the use of absorbent material. As a result of these efforts, approximately 180 kilograms of contaminated material, including absorbents and hydrocarbon-impregnated organic waste, were collected,” it was noted. It stated that after the recovery work, tours continue to be carried out to monitor for additional hydrocarbons in other areas, although nothing else has been found so far. “It is expected that once these hydrocarbon material recovery operations are concluded, the cleaning of the ship's hull will continue,” the document indicates. 889.4 tons of hydrocarbon collected on 48 beaches in the Gulf of Mexico The inter-institutional group attending to the presence of hydrocarbons on the Gulf of Mexico coast reported this Friday that it had collected 889.4 tons of the contaminant on 48 beaches in Veracruz, Tabasco, and Campeche, of which 32 are now free of contamination and 16 continue to be affected. The official balance was disseminated in a joint communiqué by the Secretariats of the Navy, Environment, Energy, Science and Technology, the state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), the Agency for Security, Energy and Environment (ASEA), among other local and federal authorities. According to this inter-institutional group, the spills reported since early March, but present since January 2026, are a consequence of a spill from a vessel and two natural oil emanations off the Campeche Sound. Authorities added that they maintain permanent monitoring of currents and weather conditions to adjust containment and cleanup. Pemex reported the temporary hiring of fishermen and residents of Agua Dulce, Coatzacoalcos, Pajapan, Mecayapan, and Tatahuicapan, in Veracruz, as well as Paraíso and Cárdenas, in Tabasco, to participate in the cleanup and collection.
