The Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado Carrillo, has highlighted the importance of focusing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teacher training within the National Educational System. In a conference on "AI and Educational Transformation in Mexico" at UNESCO, Delgado emphasized the need to prioritize communities with fewer resources to expand connectivity and develop new learning platforms.
In this regard, he underscored that technical skills such as mastery of AI, cybersecurity, and technological literacy are essential, but human skills such as creative thinking, resilience, adaptability, leadership, teamwork, communication, and collaboration are equally important, as well as empathy, compassion, and brotherhood. Delgado emphasized that the New Mexican School (NEM) proposes a humanistic, critical, and community-based approach that is fundamental, along with the principles of equality, inclusion, democracy, and collective construction, in relation to the ethical implications of AI in education.
Mario Delgado highlighted that AI provides the opportunity to optimize teachers' time to design pedagogical strategies, focusing on the human and socio-emotional aspect. This tool gives students access to personalized learning platforms, self-training, and virtual tutoring, tailored to their needs. Moreover, he mentioned that AI can be used to bridge educational gaps, allowing students in marginalized communities to access quality technological resources.
The head of the SEP also addressed the ethical challenges associated with AI, emphasizing the need for it to be used responsibly, respecting the privacy and dignity of individuals and communities. In the educational field, work is being done to transform Upper Secondary Education, incorporating careers related to AI and next-generation technologies in collaboration with industry companies.
Finally, Mario Delgado mentioned the importance of being attentive to best practices in the use of AI in education internationally and announced the creation of an AI observatory in education in collaboration with ANUIES. Additionally, he highlighted that the International Day of Education 2025 is being celebrated through reading marathons in the public schools of the country, aiming to promote reading and make Mexico a republic of readers.
