Impact of AI Investments on the Mexican Economy

The recent investment of 500 billion dollars in AI raises concerns about economic sustainability in Mexico and could transform the sector. Dependence on foreign technology is a crucial issue.

Impact of AI Investments on the Mexican Economy

Recently, significant investments have been made in artificial intelligence technologies, totaling over a billion dollars, raising questions about the economic sustainability of the sector. Despite this influx of capital, there are doubts about whether these investments will yield the expected results.

One example of this trend is the reduction in energy consumption for training AI models; however, this does not necessarily imply a lower demand for specialized hardware. Although a model has been identified as the best available in the market, its training cost is expected to be considerably higher than that of previous models.

DeepSeek, a company that required over 40 million dollars in investment to achieve its milestones in AI, has demonstrated that it is possible to make significant advancements with fewer resources. This situation contrasts with the million-dollar investments of other companies like Meta and OpenAI, resulting in impacts on financial markets, such as a sharp decline in Nvidia's shares.

The democratization of AI technology, previously reserved for large corporations with vast resources, seems to be underway thanks to reduced costs. This situation raises the possibility that more companies will venture into the development of advanced language models, reducing dependence on foreign technologies.

However, the current level of investment generates uncertainty and comparisons with past episodes of excess, as occurred with the investment in fiber optics in the 2000s. Nevertheless, initial projections indicate a significant increase in the acquisition of Nvidia chips, which could reverse the downward trend in its market value.

The artificial intelligence industry is undergoing an accelerated transformation, with leading companies like OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank driving innovation. This evolution is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with the launch of new models and the revelation of the impacts of these investments in the sector.
