The mass deportations promised by Donald Trump have the potential to disrupt the economy of Mexico, as nearly half of the 11 million undocumented people in the United States are Mexican. Of that group, 10,485 are Mexicans. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her wishes for a speedy recovery to Pope Francis, who is hospitalized. During a tour in Veracruz, she recalled a phrase from the pontiff to criticize Trump's immigration policies.
"Let no one look down on us," Sheinbaum expressed, emphasizing that Mexicans are "the best workers in the world" and underpin part of the economy of the United States. She remembered that Pope Francis, known for being a humanist, emphasizes that "no one can look at another person from the top down, because we are equals" and that the only legitimate way to do so is "when one lends a hand to help another up."
Pope Francis is "resting" after being hospitalized for a respiratory infection. President Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexicans represent 10% of the GDP of the United States and highlighted their contribution in various labor sectors. Sheinbaum mentioned that the government has a support plan in place for nationals at risk of deportation, offering scholarships, pensions, and cards to those who return to Mexico.
To date, the Government of Mexico has received 13,455 deported individuals since the start of Donald Trump's second term on January 20. These compatriots contributed nearly 65 billion dollars in remittances in 2024, representing about 4% of the GDP. Sheinbaum concluded by sending a message of support to Mexican migrants in the United States and reiterated that the country will welcome them with open arms.
