The National Workers' Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit) has been reformed, granting the general director the ability to participate with a voice and vote in the General Assembly, as well as the power to veto resolutions that go against the interests of the institute. This veto right will apply in cases where decisions are not unanimous, suspending the implementation of the corresponding resolution.
The reform also establishes that the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, with the support of the National Banking and Securities Commission, will supervise Infonavit's credit operations to ensure compliance with regulations and best practices. In case of non-compliance, the institute will be required to implement corrective programs within a specified timeframe, and in serious situations, the General Comptroller's Office will be notified to apply the corresponding sanctions.
A relevant criticism of the reform is the lack of transparency in resource management by the newly created entity. It is also highlighted that Infonavit plans to build around half a million homes during the current administration, half of the goal set by the government.
Key aspects of the reform include the maintenance of tripartism in the organs of Infonavit, such as the General Assembly, the Board of Directors, the Supervisory Commission, and other committees, where members will not receive remuneration. The Assembly will be made up of thirty members in a tripartite manner, with a duration of six years in office and the possibility of being removed.
Additionally, it is established that the general director will be appointed by the Presidency of the Republic. The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, published the reform to Infonavit in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which will allow the institute to invest in social housing and leasing.
Despite criticisms from various sectors, the reform was approved in the Senate and subsequently published. Infonavit has up to 30 days to structure its subsidiary company responsible for building and managing social and rental housing.
