Increase in Solar Panels Installation in Nuevo León

Nuevo León aims to lead solar panel installations in Mexico, investing in the industrial sector for growth. The government’s push for renewable energy opens opportunities for businesses in 700 kW projects.

The State Agency for Renewable Energies of Nuevo León (NL) expects greater growth in the penetration of solar panels in the region. Currently, NL ranks second nationally in solar panel installations, behind Jalisco. The director of the agency considers it essential to focus on the industrial sector to achieve the top position.

Compared to Jalisco, there is a difference in the basic supply rate in NL, which makes the return on investment for projects, especially at the residential level, more attractive. There has been an increase in the participation of projects at the commercial and industrial levels in recent years, indicating growth potential in those segments.

The openness to private investments in the energy sector, boosted by the federal government, is viewed positively by the director of the agency. The expected increase in the limit of distributed generation from 500 to 700 kilowatts represents an important opportunity for many companies that previously did not make that decision.

Projects for distributed generation from 700 kilowatts to 20 megawatts for self-consumption, whether in isolated mode, connected to the grid, or with the possibility of selling excess to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), are seen as an immediate response for industries, businesses, and industrial parks. These three modalities of self-consumption are expected to be a relevant opportunity in the short term.

Despite projecting short-term benefits, the director of the agency remains cautious and awaits the issuance of secondary laws to gain better clarity on the conditions and rules that will govern the renewable energy sector in Nuevo León.
