The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, mentioned that in addition to meeting with steel and aluminum manufacturers in the country, they are awaiting what will happen on April 2. On that date, the Trump administration plans to impose reciprocal tariffs globally, although it is estimated that Mexico will be exempt due to the trade provisions of the T-MEC.
Sheinbaum detailed that until that day, the secretaries of Economy and Finance, Marcelo Ebrard and Edgar Amador, respectively, will continue working with the Secretary of the Treasury. Regarding the possible 50% tariffs on Mexican steel mentioned by Trump in case of no progress at the border, the president indicated that she could not foresee whether the tariffs would be lifted by that date.
The official emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue with the U.S. government and waiting until April to know Trump’s final decision. She also pointed out that, if necessary, Mexico will take corresponding measures in reciprocity, following the example of the United States. Sheinbaum requested patience until April 2 to determine the response to the tariffs imposed by the United States on imported steel and aluminum, also reminding that it is a measure applied globally. In the press conference, she answered questions about the measures Mexico would adopt after the implementation of the 25% tariffs on these products.
