Claudia Sheinbaum Advocates for Fair Trade Agreement

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, failed to reach an agreement to stop the 25% tariffs imposed by the United States on national steel and aluminum starting March 12. Despite this, she emphasized that President Trump has been respectful in the four calls they have had.

In response to the criticisms from opponents, Sheinbaum rejected accusations of weakness towards Trump and stated that her government is prepared to take additional measures if the United States applies more tariffs on Mexico on April 2. She highlighted that they will be attentive to the dialogue and, in the event of unilateral measures, Mexico will make decisions to protect its economy.

Howard Lutnick mentioned that Mexico did not impose retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. like Canada and the European Union, which shows that some countries carefully analyze their trade actions. Regarding the praise from Marco Rubio, Sheinbaum's work in the fight against drug cartels, organizations labeled as terrorists in February, was recognized.

Sheinbaum has defended her strategy of handling Trump's threats with a "cool head," asserting that this approach has been beneficial for Mexico. She has managed to pause the general 25% tariffs on Mexico twice and hopes to reach a fair agreement with Washington following positive comments from officials like Howard Lutnick and Marco Rubio regarding trade and security. The president reiterated her commitment to ensuring the well-being of the Mexican people and the country during this process.
