Economists Discuss Local Tax Collection Issues in Mexico

Ricardo Carrillo Arronte, along with the dean of the College Jorge de la Vega, Julio Millán, and other experts such as Pablo Arroyo and Maru Romero, gathered to discuss the importance of managing the economy with talent, prudence, and nationalism in the current context. They emphasized the need to strengthen local property tax collection in Mexico, which is currently at low levels compared to other countries in South America.

During the meeting, the collection inefficiency in many municipalities, both small and large, was highlighted. Names of relevant figures in the field of economics, such as Ifigenia Martínez, Rogelio (current Rector of UNAM), Leonardo Lomelí, Enrique Dl Val, Enrique Quintana, Graciela Márquez, and Gerardo Esquivel, among others, were mentioned.

It was emphasized the need to improve property tax collection at the local level, as Mexico is lagging compared to countries like Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Colombia. The importance of efficient resource management was highlighted to avoid situations such as the need to resort to additional resources to pay year-end bonuses.

The participants of the meeting highlighted the importance of municipalities making appropriate forecasts to avoid relying on state treasuries, and anecdotes were shared that illustrate the lack of foresight in some cases. The need to improve collection efficiency at the local level and to promote greater fiscal commitment to boost the country's economic development was underlined.
