Nationally, the labor market in the country is losing dynamism, as in the first two months of the year, the formal sector of the economy only managed to recover 48 percent of the jobs lost in December. In contrast, in Nuevo León (NL), the recovery rate is 74 percent.
According to an analysis by Coparmex Nuevo León with data from the Mexican Social Security Institute, 192,552 new jobs were created in Mexico in the first two months of the year, representing 48% of the 405,259 lost last month. In NL, 33,031 jobs were recovered in the same period, which is 74% of the 44,571 lost in the last month of 2024.
Cecilia Carrillo López, director of Coparmex Nuevo León, expressed her concern about the slowdown in formal employment at the national level, attributing it to uncertainty over possible tariffs on Mexican products and legislative initiatives that impact labor costs for companies.
In the first two months of the year, seven states in the country experienced a net decrease in the number of formal jobs. These include Campeche, Mexico City, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tabasco, and Zacatecas.
In February, the number of formal workers in NL reached one million 948 thousand 233, reflecting a 3.4% increase compared to the same month of the previous year. The slowdown in the labor market is indicative of the economic challenges facing the country, as evidenced by the GDP growth figures from the last quarter of 2024, which contracted 0.6% quarterly and only grew 0.6% annually.
Carrillo emphasized the importance of formal employment as the main source of income for families, highlighting the need to create competitive conditions in the country and warning that uncertainty surrounding tariffs and investment decisions could negatively affect production and family incomes.
