The Energy Secretariat faces a significant challenge in combating fiscal fuel theft at the border with the United States, which has resulted in a slowdown in gasoline imports to Mexico. However, the problem of fuel theft, whether from pipelines or fiscal, goes beyond this point. According to a recent survey conducted by PetroIntelligence among gas station owners, most service station owners expect an increase in fuel theft, smuggling, and, consequently, a larger black market during this year.
In the energy cabinet of President Claudia Sheinbaum and Energy Secretary Luz Elena González, it has become common to hire individuals of questionable reputation. On this occasion, at Pemex, under the direction of Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, officials who were dismissed at the end of the previous administration have been reinstated. One of the most notable cases is that of Irene Báez, who was removed from her position as Legal Manager of the Northern Region in January due to alleged irregularities but was reappointed just weeks later as a Specialist Technician in the Management of Contracts and Exploration Associations at Pemex Exploration and Production.
This decision raises concerns due to the questionable resource management and the financial crisis affecting Pemex at a time of economic recession in Mexico. The lack of transparency and questionable hiring practices cast doubt on the legality and quality of fuel at service stations. With the disappearance of the Energy Regulatory Commission, uncertainty arises regarding the actions that the Energy Secretariat will take to address this issue.
It is crucial to guarantee the energy security of the country and to take actions that prevent risk situations in strategic sectors such as the transportation and distribution of natural gas. Decisions made at Pemex and other entities related to the energy sector must be aimed at maximizing value and ensuring legality and transparency in all operations. Raising our voices and demanding accountability in resource management and hiring is essential to maintain integrity and effectiveness in the Mexican energy industry.
