The President of the United States, Donald Trump, expressed his concern about the lack of respect for the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (USMCA) during a meeting in the Oval Office with the Prime Minister of Canada. Amid the tension caused by the tariff measures imposed by Trump, Mexico and Canada are considering the possibility of joining together to maintain the free trade agreement and strengthen economic integration among the three countries.
In a meeting with Mark Carney, the Canadian Prime Minister, Trump mentioned the importance of reinforcing the USMCA and establishing a new bilateral relationship. Both leaders highlighted the relevance of maintaining the benefits of the trade agreement and continuing communication between the economies of North America. The President of Mexico, Sheinbaum, has emphasized several times the need to preserve the USMCA to foster regional competition against other continents.
During the Annual Assembly of the Chamber of the Transformation Industry, Sheinbaum stated that the agreement is fundamental for the United States and Mexico, and that together they do not compete, but rather complement each other to face global competition. Trump indicated that the trade agreement must be respected and corrected in future negotiations, suggesting the possibility of adjusting it or ending it next year. Despite considering the USMCA as an effective agreement, the U.S. President insisted on the importance of its compliance for the benefit of all the countries involved.
