The Mexican government has submitted a bill to the Chamber of Deputies proposing significant tariff reductions on a wide range of goods. This draft, which followed a three-month evaluation and consultation with affected sectors, will be debated in the coming days. Key adjustments include lowering tariffs from 35% to 30% on products like toothpaste, office supplies, plastic ornaments, synthetic yarns, electric blankets, porcelain, hair clippers, and irons. The most extensive reduction was from 35% to 25%, covering a broad array of cosmetics, leather goods, paper, cardboard, textiles, wooden furniture, and various auto parts. However, the maximum tariff of 50% remains unchanged for complete vehicles, including electric ones, and a specific set of steel products. The modifications show that a significant portion of the items initially proposed for a 50% tariff were scaled down. This includes medium and high-displacement cars, new electric vehicles, cargo transport units, specific steel products, and iron or steel structures like bridges. Conversely, some tariffs were increased to 35% for categories that were previously undefined. For example, the tariff on ties and silk accessories was cut from 50% to 45%. Other products saw reductions from 35% to 36%, such as certain large tires, synthetic fabrics, steel tubes, metal cans, trailers, vacuum cleaners, and diapers.
